A Common Disaster
When AirJet Flight 83 departs Baltimore and crashes into the Key Bridge only three survivors are pulled from the icy wreckage. Weaving together their stories from the days and decades both before and after the crash into a larger narrative, A Common Disaster examines the pattern of belief evoked by accidents to show how individuals are changed forever by their common experience.
Wonders of the Unseen World (In progress)
A collection of short stories
A collection of stories inspired by early 20th century treasuries of folklore and folktales from the United States. These twelve stories excavate hidden truths that live beneath familiar tales and explore mysteries that thrive at the intersection of real and imagined landscapes.
A daughter, seeking to assuage her mother’s illness, falls through the earth and becomes the mythologized skeletal remains tourist gawk at in the Luray Caverns. The construction of a stalagpipe organ starts her journey to reclaim her memories and body. A woman reeling from a painful breakup takes up painting and discovers the power to vanish objects, animals, and people that she renders on her canvas. Sightings of a lake serpent plague a New England town and, for one retired police officer, dredge up memories of old secrets and mothers that may be monsters. Upon the sudden death of her brother, a woman tattoos his favorite bird, the Blue Jay, on her wrist only to realize the creature flutters to life every time she tells a lie. When a newly married woman travels to the New Mexican desert, she comes face to face with evidence of her childhood claims to have lived a prior life as an artist named “Beck.” The Brood X cicadas emerge after 17 years and a woman finds herself looping back in time to her teenage self, trying to rewrite her history with all the important women in her life.
The Space Between Our Adjacent Hearts
A collection of flash fiction
Three series of connected stories explore the longings of the human heart. Seeking connection and meaning in the natural world is found in the struggle to plant a garden, escape the city, or get rid of a father. A desire to leave behind family and self-destructive patterns to find real love traces along a teenage couple’s shoplifting adventure gone wrong to the weight of superstition on their family. Alternating between yearning for forgiveness and release from grief, is the chronicle of a man’s last days before his suicide and his estranged wife’s requiem letters offered in reply.
